iTunes Review

The Velvet Underground had more solid songs stashed away in the vaults than most bands manage to release on proper albums. Released in 1985, VU was the first official release of songs that had already become well-known thanks to bootlegs. Most stem from sessions done between 1968 and 1969, after their third album, and there's not a dud here. Even the goofy tracks ("Temptation," "Best Friend") and the novelty numbers ("Sticking") are great. If you're looking for noisy scorchers, try "Foggy Notion" and "I Can't Stand It." If you want to hear Lou Reed's literate junkie schtick, there's "Stephanie Says" and "Ocean." But we prefer the way these two sides to the Velvets' music intersect-the uncanny way they make outsider perspectives so accessible.

The lamest reviews I've ever ever seen

The Velvet Underground not only shaped rock and roll, punk, pop...the influence of Lou and the band allowed others to reach out beyond mainstream at the time. Lisa Says? Stephanie Says? I want to meet them someday. Outstanding lyrics, outstanding music. How can this not make you smile? Don't stop here, explore all of VU and enjoy! You'll understand why other bands after them even exist...

One of the Better Odds n' Sods Collections

How often can one come across an Outtakes & Rarities compilation and say it contains some of the group's best work? While some tracks are somewhat weak in comparison to the VU's best work, the best tracks here ("I Can't Stand It"; "Foggy Notion"; "Andy's Chest"; "I'm Sticking With You") shine. All in all, the album-which contains much of an aborted 4th album for the Verve label-comes across as the bridge between the hushed Proto-Alternative of the Self-Titled Album and the forceful Rock n' Roll of Loaded. While it might be much too for those new to the Velvets, for the diehard fans, this one is essential.

Biography

Formed: 1964 in New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '90s

Few rock groups can claim to have broken so much new territory, and maintain such consistent brilliance on record, as the Velvet Underground during their brief lifespan. It was the group's lot to be ahead of, or at least out of step with, their time. The mid- to late '60s was an era of explosive growth and experimentation in rock, but the Velvets' innovations — which blended the energy of rock with the sonic adventurism of the avant-garde, and introduced a new degree of social realism and sexual...
